CariFin Games 2014 – Event Report
Even the inclement weather could not stop the 23rd CariFin Game and Cross Country Race, which took place at the Sevilla Golf Course, Couva on Sunday 8th June. Many braved the rainy conditions to come out and experience the much anticipated 2014 edition of the races, with contestants vying for the coveted titles of being this year’s winners. Although the weather looked like it would have won the battle of the day, it did not place a damper on the jovial spirits of all present. Groups, families and individuals came with different colours to represent and show support for their financial institution of choice. The focus of the day was having clean healthy fun and the enjoyment of living an active lifestyle.
Representatives for each team arrived early to decorate and design their tents in their institution’s colour. Balloons, banners, drapes, palms, ribbons and flags were all exquisitely laid out to grab the attention of anyone that passed by. As the early morning rain made its way toward another area, the sun began to peep through and the day’s events were well on their way. The children were not to be left out; there were short races to keep them active and involved. For those who were not too keen on competitive athletics, they had the pleasure of prancing around on the bouncy castle and taking flight on the swings.
Fun activities which challenged each institution’s strength and ability to listen actively were indeed a pleasure for all who were present to watch. Games such as the ‘Math Relay’ which engaged each player in working out a math problem before running and tagging their partner, indeed made many appreciate the mental discipline of those who were mathematically savvy. There was also the balloon crush race, where each member of a team had to run to their partner at the other end of the field and try to pop the balloons as quickly as possible without using their hands. These races fostered great team spirit and a kaleidoscope of smiles and high energy, exerting from all who participated. There was a race for everyone present and no one was left out of the fun. The interest wasn’t solely on winning, but having a grand time and creating unity and genuine camaraderie among colleagues.
When it came to the ‘tug-of-war’ challenge, it was all about bragging rights and which institution can hold the title of being the ‘strongest’ financial institution. First Citizens Bank came out victorious after defeating Inter Commercial Bank, Scotia Bank, Republic Bank and Guardian Group, who put up strong opposition showing that they were not about to give up too easily. However; FCB’s strength won the day, applying pressure on their opponents to take the title of the 2014 ‘Tug-of-War’ Champions.
The Queens were not to be left out of the spotlight. Each queen, representing their respective institutions, came out with her entourage and showed off their dancing skills, trying to gain the judges’ approval for the best Ms. CariFin dance routine and becoming the choice of Ms. CariFin 2014. There were mixtures of urban beats, fused with Soca and African rhythms as each queen led intricate and elaborate routines and movements. Inter-Commercial Bank came out victorious as they got the judges nod of approval to take them into a phenomenal win. Guardian Group came in second, followed by First Citizens for third spot. There was also another dance off competition and this time Guardian Group took home the title, followed by First Citizens, then Inter- Commercial Bank. The judging for the best decorated tents was a tuff one as all teams spared no effort in making their area stand out. Guardian once again showed that they were a force to be reckoned with as they won the top spot with their tent being decorated in bright orange and blue, to represent the company’s logo. Inter Commercial Bank came closely behind and took second position as it was a close race between them and Guardian Group. First Citizens settled in third as their tent showed that they placed great imagination and innovation to their design. Although all tents were beautifully displayed and well represented, there could have only been one winner. The Ms. CariFin competition was indeed a phenomenal one; the queens were beautiful made up and came to dominate the show. This time Inter Commercial Bank took the first spot, followed by Guardian Group and thirdly First Citizen. The young ladies indeed showcased their knowledge and fashion sense to the crowd gathered, as they adorned themselves in their company’s colours and gilts and glamour of accessories and make up.
The crowd grew as the start of the country races drew near. All of the 2013 winners were present, ready and eager to defend their titles. The afternoon was cool and the atmosphere was just right to begin the races. The cross country walk kicked off first, followed by the cross country run. The organisers of CariFin have always ensured that the games are safe and fair and have continuously been improving as each year goes by. They are also preparing for their upcoming CariFin Fun Fitness and Friendship Boat Cruise to be held on the 5th July aboard the Coral Vision. It promises to be an evening of great excitement and if it’s anything like the cross country races, then patrons can surely expect a treat on the night.
