Catch All The Action From The CariFin Cross Country 2018

The Sevilla Golf Course in Couva was alive with activity on May 28 as the CariFin Games Family Day & Cross Country Event got underway.

The eagerly anticipated CariFin Cross Country is the final of a four-event running series, which led off with one lap around the Savannah, continued with the Green Mile in the Sand Track, moved into the Chancellor Challenge and concluded with the Sevilla Cross Country.

This year’s event saw participation from ANSA Financial Services (ANSA), Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT), First Citizens (FCB), Guardian Group (GG), JMMB Group (JMMB), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Republic Bank Limited (RBL), Sagicor (SAG), Scotia Bank (SB) and Unit Trust Corporation (UTC).

Kris Deonanan, a competitor for the past three years, slipped into a third-place win in the CariFin Male Cross Country 2018. It was a clear battle for second place as Deonanan trailed just two seconds behind second-placed Abijah Phillip from RBL, who clocked a time of 0:26:56.

Jean-Paul Drakes was the clear favourite, and his dominance was on full display as he comfortably secured a first-place win.
“I gave every bit of effort in terms of strategy and strength, but the mental edge and probably youth, was on the side of Abijah Nelson-Phillip as he edged me out by 2 seconds for 2nd place. I, however, will be forever grateful for this experience, as I gave my absolute all and feel happy with my 3rd place finish,” Deonanan said.

He congratulated all who participated in the “Olympics” of the financial institutions CariFin 2018 describing it as “truly an Epic experience”.
Second place winner in the CariFin Male Cross Country 2018 Abijah Phillip spoke of his experience at the 2018 event as the most enjoyable. However, Phillip of RBL has already set his sights on a 2019 victory.
“2018’s CariFin has been the most enjoyable and the same thing proved true for the Cross Country. I cannot say it was the most satisfying as I came second.

But, it was definitely the most exciting cross country I’ve experienced in my three years of competing, the battle between Kris and myself was great. It was all in all an amazing experience and I’m looking forward to battling for 1st place in 2019.”

Tessa Weeks was in fine form claiming victory in the CariFin Cross-Country Female Walker event. This was Weeks’ third consecutive win, having taken the top prize in the event in 2016, 2017 and now 2018.
The first place winner from RBL noted that her success was no easy feat.
“It was not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the competition grew fiercer year-on-year. Minutes before this year’s race, offers of alcohol were made to me to distract me from my goal to achieve victory in 2018. Little did they know that they had a fighting chance as I had been unable to maintain my usual training regimen for the three (3) weeks prior to the Cross-Country Walk.”

She credited her wins at the Cross-country walk event to her consistency and dedication at her boot camp training, which she undergoes 5 days each week).

“Training is fun for me and has me ready at a moment’s notice for any event that arises.
