Many of the participants in the CariFin Games prepare by training for long hours in a number of ways.
For example, Most Goals Winner 2016 Gerardo Phillips recently said he prepares by playing football three or four times a week.
2016 Most Improved Female Runner Chrissy Hospedales said she trains by running daily, while others said they work out at the gym to keep fit in preparation for the various CariFin events.
But if you hate going to the gym, and prefer a more scenic way to get your workout in, hiking might be just the activity for you.
And luckily, Trinidad has an abundance of hiking trails and destinations to keep you from getting bored.
Hiking can be moderate such as walking along a flat nature path, or it can be extreme such as climbing to the top of one of our breath-taking mountains along the Northern Range.
The great thing about hiking is that anyone, no matter their fitness level, can do it. And you can “exploracise”, which is explore and exercise combined.
The benefits of hiking are tremendous.
According to WebMD, hiking can:
- Lower your risk of heart disease.
- Improve your blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
- Boost bone density, since walking is a weight-bearing exercise.
- Build strength in your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, and the muscles in your hips and lower legs.
- Strengthen your core.
- Improve balance
- Help control your weight
- Boost your mood.
No matter where you live in Trinidad and Tobago there is a hiking trail nearby.
The most popular might be the Cazabon Trail in Chaguaramas, better known as Bamboo Cathedral. IT is a 300 metre stretch of roadway leading to a satellite tracking station overlooking the sea.
With a steady incline to the top, you are guaranteed a great workout to prepare you for CariFin evens like the Green Mile, Chancellor Hill Challenge and the Cross Country Run/Walk. If you prefer a hike with a prize at the end, a visit to any of this country’s waterfalls will intrigue you.
There are many to choose from including Edith Falls in Chaguaramas, Angel Fall in Maracas, Turure Watersteps in Valencia or the Rio Seco waterfall.
A rugged trail with varying degrees of inclines and difficulty will take you to beautiful waterfalls and pools you can soak in and sooth your muscles.
Some you can go alone and other it would be advisable to undertake with a proper guide.
But whichever you choose, you are guaranteed some good exercise.
Because exercise doesn’t always have to be in a gym or around the Savannah. Take advantage of the natural beauty and experience of hiking and try “exploracising” as you train for your CariFin event.
