Gina Hart Wins

By Elizabeth Williams

Gina-Hart“I started running a little under 8 years ago when I moved to Barbados and was looking for extra-curricular activities. My preference distance running…. And generally I preferred endurance events to the shorter faster events.” This is the story of Gina Hart, of Guardian Group who is the new winner of the CariFin Chancellor Challenge 2015. Speaking with Carifin News on her feat, Ms. Hart said she has always been quite active, and took part in a number of sporting events growing up, but primarily gymnastics and ballet. “ I started those sports as a youngster and continued through my teenage years.

I started cycling a few years before my move to Barbados but did not maintain that once I was in Barbados, as the persons I cycled with slowly dropped out one by one. Cycling on your own via roads and highways is not very safe. That’s when I started running in (2007). I decided to train for a 10k and I got hooked,” Hart said. Hart said she has been running ever since. “ I love the challenge of trying to better my personal time at varying distances.

I moved back to Trinidad in 2013 and did jump back on my bike very briefly in 2014 when I decided to enter the T&T National Duathlon (Standard distance). She said, once that event was over her focus however, returned to running.” Currently I am only involved in running but am considering entering a triathlon. Once I make the decision to take part in a triathlon I would start cycling and swimming.

Hart expressed being pleased with the results of the race and to be able to represent the Guardian Group. “ It is always rewarding when you see the results of hard training pay off. It gives you the motivation to keep on going.  Unfortunately I was unable to take part in the Savannah lap and the Green Mile, but was grateful to take part in the third leg of the series and to obtain a win for Guardian.” Hart said it was not an easy event, but luckily she was able to maintain her pace at the end because the 2nd and 3rd place finishers were not far behind! “Congrats not only to all the winners but also to all finishers. It’s great to see the high level of participation in the Carifin series.”
