An avid reader with the heart of an explorer, Deputy CEO Business Generation at First Citizens, Jason Julien, uses running as his escape from the pressures that come with the job of a corporate executive.
The formidable Julien, the overall winner in this year’s 41-50 category of the CariFin Games and a veteran in the Games, continues to rack up awards.
After winning the 31-40 category in 2007, he set his sights on adding another category to his belt – the 41 – 50 category. And, he did so comfortably.
Describing this year’s victory as nothing short of a proud moment, Julien said the win will serve as motivation to keep on track and not lose sight of holding on to that title.
“I was actually aiming to challenge for the Prize next year… I guess now I’ll have to focus on trying to defend the “40-49 Crown”. Good motivation to stay focused and to keep training hard.”
Julien trains with running group Richard Jones Racing under the guidance of the veteran coach the group is named after.
Being part of that running community, he said, helps to keep him enthusiastic and motivated, especially when he may not be in the mood to train or after a bad run or race.
He credits consistency in training and goals to his continued improved performance.
“Sometimes the gains may be incremental but as long as I am advancing and healthy it is a good day… God’s grace to be able to manage a hectic work and family life and finding time to train, even when I may be tired and stressed after a long day, is critical to this success.”
Support from his family is also instrumental, he added.
Julien said running is a hobby and a passion, and his reward after a long day of being trapped in meetings and chained to his desk, which allows him to escape and be free, clear his thoughts and refocus his mind.
Just another thing you may not know about him – the senior banking executive is a trained thespian who wishes he had more opportunities to practice his craft.
A lover of good food and drink, the foodie at heart said this is why he needs to stay active.
Some lesser known facts about Julien include his love of non-fiction, particularly graphic novels. He now boasts an extensive collection.
“Some may call them comic books but the storytelling and character development is more akin to a blockbuster movie than an Archie digest.”
Julien said he is ready to defend the 41-50 Title.
