New comer Shayne Barran of Republic Bank captures the male cross country title of 21st Edition of the CariFin (Caribbean financial Institutions) Games on the Final Day – Sunday June 03, 2012 at Sevilla Golf Course in Couva. Wendy D’arbasie of Central Bank secured the female version after knocking at the cross country main event door for quite a while.
Sunday evening at Sevilla golf course was perfect conditions for cross country running, with the overcast conditions and bit of sunlight lending itself ideally to the pursuit of athletic endeavors.
D’arbasie was lining up for the start as the favorite with 3 wins already registered in her name in the events leading up to this day. D’arbasie had little trouble shaking off her competition on the undulating sometimes wet, course. Her nearest rival – one time cross country winner Crystal Ann Awai of GHL was a distant 4.33 minutes behind. D’arbasie went on to win the race in 28.30, Awai finished in 32.26 for 2nd place and Falomi Marcano of First Citizens in 33.58 for 3rd place. It was a great final day for D’arbasie as she crowned off the whole CariFin Games experience, undefeated…. Winning all four running events in the Carifin Games.
When Barran reached by the bridge (about 250 meters) to enter the course he was already 10 meters ahead of the trailing pack. The normal route was changed this year due to a water logged section of the course. The race was re-routed up the hill, up to the old Caroni Musuem and back down to the primary school to where they continued to the normal course.
Barran seemed undaunted by that fact and kept gathering momentum as he went along, he finished the 3 lap journey in 27.42 leaving the 2nd place finisher John Donaldson of First Citizens behind by 5.07 seconds. Donaldson finished overall in 33.00 with Clifford Bogle of Bank of Jamaica in filling 3rd place in 35.48.
To complete the top 5 listing for the male and female we had KarenBegg of RBC in 4th among the female with a 35.17 timing and Darcel Jones of First Citizens in 5th place with 37.38. This was Barran 3rd consecutive win in this year’s CariFin Games.
