CariFin Football Tournament Report
Onlookers and spectators had a treat at the CariFin Games football tournament in a 22 game match-up, which saw the top teams within the financial services sector battling it out for supremacy.
With this being the 6th competitive event of 10,a lot was at stake and many were playing for not just pride but for the glory of winning.
Two tournaments were carded on this day (cricket and football) but due to inclement weather cricket had to be cancelled. This event took place at Republic Bank’s sporting facility in Barataria from approximately 11 am and with a lineup of seven teams.
The competition was played on a hockey sized field with two games going on simultaneously. However, because of the weather, the referees were forced to decrease the playing time for each game from 15 minutes to 10 minutes, to allow for all the games to be completed.
Scotiabank journey’s to winning the CariFin Games football tournament was not an easy one, as they first had to overcome six teams to make it to the finals. On the way, they claimed victories over Central Bank, First Citizens, Guardian Group, but suffered losses to ANSA Financial Services and walked away with draws against RBL and UTC.
They were able to accumulate the most points (11) and win in the finals against First Citizens in a 1-0 clash.
“Today was a long day but once again the strength and spirit of a Scotia banker came through and we were able to bring forth the victory in the finals.” said an excited Scotiabank football team captain, Ayinde Fraser, after the tournament victory.
On a day when the conditions were wet and slippery part of the time, because of the early rains, strength, persistence, and focus were definitely pre-requisites to prevailing and excelling at this competition.
Some exceptional individual performances came out of the tournament, for the winning team Scotiabank’s Ravi Persad, found the net 4 times to help his side to victory in the competition. On the other hand, the First Citizen’s duo of James Brown and Kevon Durham scored 4 goals each, to assist the green machine in holding on to 2nd place.
